Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has called upon Meta, the parent company of Facebook, to expose and address the misinformation campaigns allegedly launched by certain countries to undermine the significance of the July-August public uprising. During a meeting at the state guest house Jamuna on Sunday, December 8, with Meta’s Director of Human Rights Policy, Miranda Sissons, Dr. Yunus emphasized that “widespread misinformation is being disseminated on Facebook, and the people of Bangladesh are suffering because of it.”
In response, Sissons outlined Meta’s human rights policies and assured that the company remains vigilant to prevent its platform from being misused to spread false information.
Dr. Yunus also urged Meta to make its technologies more user-friendly for young entrepreneurs, stating, “Technology is a tool to achieve something, but it does not decide what we want to do with it. So, we need to reengineer it to make it perfect.”
He added, “There is great potential with Facebook. It can be utilized to create entrepreneurs among the youth.”
Dr. Yunus further emphasized that the Bangladesh government is committed to collaborating with Facebook for the benefit of the country’s youth population.
The meeting was attended by Lamia Morshed, Chief Coordinator for SDGs to the Chief Advisor; Sajib M. Khairul Islam, Private Secretary-2 to the Chief Advisor; Ruzan Sarwar, Meta’s Head of Public Policy for Bangladesh and Nepal; Nayanthara Narayanan, Associate General Counsel at Meta; and Alice Budisatrio, Head of Misinformation Policy for Meta’s Asia-Pacific region.
