Bangladesh is participating in the prestigious World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2024, held in Izmir, Turkey. The 21st edition of the event, which began on Thursday, sees four teams from Bangladesh—Mayer Doa Robotics, Cyber Squad, Change Makers 2024, and Team Cyberwave—competing among global contenders.
Representing Innovation and Excellence
This year marks the fourth time Bangladesh has participated in the three-day-long Olympiad. The four teams consist of 12 competitors:
- Mayer Doa Robotics: Rakibul Islam (Dhaka Residential Model College), Anas Bin Azim (Adamjee Cantonment College), and S.M. Mahiyuddin Sami (Rajuk Uttara Model College).
- Cyber Squad: Afia Humaira (Birshreshtha Munshi Abdur Rouf Public College), Omera Fidan (Feni Girls’ Cadet College), and Nuzhat Jahan (SOS Hermann Gmeiner College).
- Change Makers 2024: Ragib Yasar Rahman (Dhaka Residential Model College), Sadia Anjum Pushpo (Shahjalal University of Science and Technology), and B.M. Hamim (Government Madan Mohan College).
- Team Cyberwave: Wamia Nair Shehrizad (Sir John Wilson School), Junaerah Mahtalat (DPS STS School), and Ashalina Joharin.
Leadership and Organization
The teams are led by Munir Hasan and deputy leader Maherul Azam Qureshi. Additionally, Sajjad Islam, Redwan Ferdous, and Sihab Sarar Ahmed are serving as judges in the international phase of the competition.
Journey to the International Stage
In September 2024, the national round of WRO Bangladesh was hosted by Southeast University. Winning teams were selected for the international round after a rigorous training camp. The event was supported by sponsors such as Yobi (Platinum) and Brain Station 23 (Gold), with organization by the Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN).
Bangladesh’s Growing Legacy
Since becoming a WRO member in 2020, Bangladesh has consistently excelled. In 2021, the country placed 10th in an online competition. The following year, Bangladesh secured a bronze medal and 8th place in an in-person event, competing against 375 teams from 73 countries. In 2023, the teams reached new heights, finishing in the top five globally.
Competing in Key Categories
This year, Bangladeshi teams are competing in three categories: Future Engineers, Future Innovators, and Robo Sports. According to Maherul Azam Qureshi, their achievements reflect the country’s growing expertise and potential in robotics on the global stage.
This marks a significant milestone for Bangladesh as it continues to shine in the field of robotics and innovation, fostering a new generation of tech leaders.
