The Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University (BDU), Bangladesh, Professor Dr. Mohammad Abu Yusuf, urged everyone to remember the sacrifices made by students during the July Movement, which paved the way for a renewed vision of Bangladesh. He made these remarks during a memorial program held on Tuesday (November 26, 2024) at BDU’s academic building in Kaliakair, Gazipur. The event honored the martyrs and injured of the anti-discrimination movement and included a cultural program reflecting the historical July Uprising.
Sacrifices for a New Bangladesh
Professor Dr. Yusuf stated, “The July Movement was a pivotal moment when our beloved students gave their lives and shed their blood to inspire a dream of a new Bangladesh. Just five months ago, we could not have imagined that the nation would reach a point where such dreams could take shape.” He emphasized that this movement and the events of August 5 will stand as a landmark in global history, symbolizing a profound transformation.
A Call for Change
Special guest and Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain quoted Herodotus, the Greek historian, stating, “When disorder becomes the norm in politics, nature itself intervenes to restore order.” He credited Bangladesh’s youth for disrupting the status quo with their visionary ideas and active participation, bringing meaningful change to the nation’s political landscape.
Event Highlights
The program featured speeches from prominent university faculty, including:
- Md. Ashrafuzzaman, Chairman of the Department of Educational Technology and Engineering
- Suman Saha, Chairman of the Department of IoT and Robotics Engineering
- Rakib Hossain, Acting Chairman of the Department of Cybersecurity Engineering
Additionally, Tanzin Aml Tahsin, a student from the 2020–21 academic session, shared her insights. Teachers, staff, and students of the university were in attendance.
Cultural Commemoration
The event concluded with Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Yusuf showcasing a photo exhibition and documentary on the events of the July Revolution, followed by a cultural program highlighting the historical significance of the movement.
