The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has reported that over 375,000 income tax returns have been submitted online since the launch of its e-return system on September 9, 2024. This innovative platform aims to streamline tax compliance and enhance convenience for taxpayers across Bangladesh.
Speaking on Monday, November 18, NBR’s Director of Public Relations, Syed A. Mu’men, stated that an average of 8,000 e-returns are now being submitted daily on working days.
NBR Chairman Md. Abdur Rahman Khan announced plans for full automation of the tax payment process during the inauguration of a help desk at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s customs area on Sunday. He also revealed that a mobile app will be introduced to further simplify tax return submissions starting next year.
The system, designed for individual taxpayers, offers functionalities including:
- Preparing and submitting returns online or offline with print options.
- Paying taxes via online banking, credit/debit cards, or mobile financial services (e.g., Nagad, bKash, Rocket).
- Receiving instant submission confirmation and obtaining tax clearance certificates.
To make the process more user-friendly, NBR has upgraded the registration system, requiring taxpayers to use their TIN and a biometrically verified mobile number registered in their name. Mobile numbers can be verified by dialing *16001#.
NBR has mandated online tax return submissions for all government employees, scheduled banks, mobile telecom operators, and certain multinational companies within the jurisdictions of Dhaka North, Dhaka South, Gazipur, and Narayanganj city corporations.
In preparation for the initiative, IT-skilled representatives from various ministries have been trained to assist employees with e-return submissions. Additionally, an e-challan help desk has been established under the SPFMS program to provide support from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
NBR encourages all taxpayers to utilize the e-return system for timely compliance and has extended congratulations to those who have already submitted their returns successfully. Training workshops are available through applications submitted via NBR’s websites, www.nbr.gov.bd and www.etaxnbr.gov.bd.
