The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has announced that it will initiate criminal cases against individuals found guilty of registering as voters or modifying their National Identity Cards (NIDs) with false or fraudulent information. Although this measure has been stipulated in law, the EC has now issued specific directives to field officers to enforce it more rigorously.
On Sunday, November 3, EC’s Director General of the NID Wing, Md. Mahbub Alam Talukder, sent this directive to all local election offices across the country.
The directive states that any citizen attempting to register or amend their NID with false information for fraudulent purposes will face criminal charges or general diary entries. This measure aims to curb misuse in the NID registration and correction processes.
Previously, the Director General of the NID Wing had instructed officers to apply a zero-tolerance approach to irregularities and corruption. The instruction specified that if corruption is detected, both departmental action and criminal proceedings should be initiated against those responsible.
