Sunamganj University of Science and Technology (SUBIPROBI) is set to begin its academic journey on November 3, with 128 students attending the first classes of the 2023-24 academic session.
According to university administration sources, although the university has permission to admit 160 students across four subjects, 128 students have enrolled so far. The institution is launching its academic activities with four departments. The enrolled students include 38 in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, 30 in the Department of Chemistry, 30 in the Department of Physics, and 30 in the Department of Mathematics. Among the students, seven have been admitted under the Freedom Fighter quota, and one under the Disability quota. Five of the admitted students are from Sunamganj district.
The university currently has 17 faculty members, including the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar, supported by 43 officers and staff. However, due to the absence of a permanent campus, classes will commence at a temporary campus. The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Md. Abu Nayeem Sheikh, informed that preparations are underway to conduct classes at a building of the Textile Institute located on the northern side of the Sunamganj-Sylhet regional highway in Shantiganj Upazila.
He stated, “Sunamganj is a remote area, and many students travel to other parts of the country for higher education. Now, students from various regions will come to Sunamganj for education. I hope this will contribute to the advancement of education in this district.”
The Sunamganj University of Science and Technology Bill was approved by the Cabinet on December 30, 2019. The “Sunamganj University of Science and Technology Act” was passed in the National Parliament on November 18, 2020. On June 14, 2022, Professor Md.
