A total of 11 percent of mobile towers are down in 10 flood-affected districts. Among them, 91.9 percent of towers are non-operational in Feni. And the least damage was caused in Sylhet. In Sylhet, 0.6 percent of mobile towers are down due to floods.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) says that the mobile towers cannot be activated due to lack of electricity and sinking of the tower area.
BTRC has given this information about the mobile network situation in flood-affected areas till 3 pm on Friday.
BTRC said that 1,461 towers out of 13,240 towers in Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Cumilla, Brahmanbaria, Chittagong, Khagrachari, Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts are non-functional till 3 pm today. 11 thousand 779 are still active. Out of 653 towers in Feni district, only 53 are operational.
Then 21.5 percent in Noakhali district, 15.2 percent in Khagrachhari, 13.9 percent in Cumilla, 7.1 percent in Laxmipur, 5.7 percent in Moulvibazar, 2.7 percent in Chittagong, 1.7 percent in Brahmanbaria, and 0.3 percent in Habiganj and In Sylhet, 0.6 percent of towers are non-operational.
BTRC says coordination work is underway to operate towers in the affected areas with the help of the army. However, the tower areas which have sunk, cannot be started until the water recedes. Rehabilitation of damaged towers in Feni district has become challenging and time-consuming. Apart from this, BTRC has feared that communication establishment activities will be disrupted due to worsening flood situation in Sylhet and Moulvibazar areas.
