Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Engineer Mohiuddin Ahmed has resigned. Ministry sources said that the resignation letter was sent to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications around 4:30 pm on Wednesday.
Mohiuddin Ahmed wrote, ‘Currently I am ill and am unable to perform my duties. That’s why I resign voluntarily.’
He resigned a day after his name appeared in the initial report as BTRC chairman on the verbal orders of former state minister for ICT department Zunaid Ahmed Palak during student-crowd protests. After the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and moved to India, he no longer held office in BTRC.
When contacted to inquire about this, his mobile phone was found switched off.
By the way, since December 14 last year, Engineer Mohiuddin Ahmed had been serving as the chairman of BTRC. Before that, he served as the Vice Chairman of the organization.
During the quota reform movement, mobile internet and broadband internet were shut down across the country from July 17 night and July 18 night. Five days later on July 23, broadband internet connectivity returned to a limited range. And after 10 days on July 28 mobile internet was launched. But Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok were closed. Social media including Facebook was launched in Bangladesh from 2 pm on July 31. Again, on August 2, Meta platforms were shut down on mobile networks.
On August 4, the day before Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and fled, the mobile internet was stopped again. On the morning of August 5, mobile and broadband internet were restarted after the broadband internet was shut down for a few hours. BTRC controls all types of telecommunication and internet systems in the country. The organization came under criticism as a government agency for shutting down the internet.
