An engineer of the Housing and Public Works Department was arrested in Barisal on Thursday along with about Tk 26 lakh in cash, 10 thousand dollars and about 1 kg of gold jewelry. Name of the detained engineer is Md. Haroon or Rashid. He is working as Executive Engineer of Patuakhali Housing and Public Works Department.
The students of anti-discrimination student movement searched the engineer’s car and got these money and gold ornaments while performing the duties of traffic control in Chaumatha area of C&B road in the city. Later he was handed over to the police.
Shakil Hossain, a member of BNCC, who is engaged in maintaining order on the road, said that, a huge amount of cash, dollars, gold jewelry and bank checks were found with Harun or Rashid; the army patrol team was informed. The responsible army personnel reached the spot and handed over Haroon or Rashid to Kotwali Model Police Station.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barisal Kotwali Model Police Station Md. Mostafizur Rahman confirmed the matter. He said that the detained engineer could not prove the exact amount and source of this money. He is being handed over to Patuakhali District Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Soma Sarkar. She had already reached Barisal to receive the detained engineer.
