Twitter has temporarily banned the accounts of nearly a dozen journalists since Thursday. Twitter has suspended the accounts of several journalists, including the New York Times and the Washington Post. “Account suspended” notices were posted on the Twitter accounts of the journalists concerned.
Reuters has yet to confirm why those accounts were suspended. The suspended accounts include those of journalists from several media houses, including The Washington Post, New York Times, Mashable, CNN and Substack. Journalists’ accounts were blocked late Thursday night.
Twitter said in a statement that ‘The accounts that violate Twitter’s rules have been suspended’. In response to a tweet about the account suspension, Musk said the doxxing rules also apply to journalists. Twitter has recently imposed many restrictions on the sharing of information or posts, known as doxxing. It is mostly something related to personal information.
A spokesperson for The New York Times said “It is unfortunate that the Twitter accounts of several prominent journalists, including The New York Times’ Ryan Mack, were suspended tonight. Neither the Times nor Ryan received an explanation as to why this happened. We expect the account suspension of all journalists to be lifted immediately and Twitter to provide a satisfactory explanation for this action”.
Earlier on Wednesday (December 14), a profile that tracked Musk’s private jet was shut down. Legal action is also announced.
