Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Md. Shahab Uddin said that the government is committed to protecting the ozone layer to protect people from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. He said that all the programs and projects undertaken under the Montreal Protocol for the protection of the ozone layer are being approved and implemented by the government on time with special importance.
On Monday (September 19), the Minister of Environment claimed so while speaking as the Chief Guest at the discussion meeting organized on the occasion of World Ozone Day-2022 under the theme of ‘Montreal Protocol at 35 – Commitment to protect life’.
Deputy Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Habibun Nahar, Secretary Dr. Farhina Ahmed spoke as special guests. Additional Secretary Md. Moniruzzaman, Resident Representative of UNDP Stefan Liler, project director of ODS project Mdt. Ziaul Haque and others also spoke while Director General of the Department of Environment Dr. Abdul Hamid presided over the meeting.
While speaking as the Chief Guest, the minister said, “The National Cooling Plan is being formulated with guidelines to prevent the use of HCFC in Bangladesh. Bangladesh will start working on the Kigali Amendment Implementation Plan very soon. I seek the cooperation of all stakeholders in this regard.” The Environment Minister said, currently, under the Montreal Protocol, the phase out of Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used in air conditioning, fire fighting and thermal foam sectors is underway. For this purpose we are implementing HCFC Phase Out Management Plan-II. Its alternative technology would be ozone-depleting and climate-friendly at the same time. By implementing this, Bangladesh will be able to reduce the consumption of HCFCs by 67.50 percent by 2025.
