On 27-28 July 2022, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) conducted operations against illegal telecommunication services in the Rohingya camp of Ukhia-Teknaf police station of Cox’s Bazar district and its surrounding areas with the cooperation of local administration and RAB. The inspection team under the leadership of M. A. Taleb Hossain, Director of Enforcement and Inspection Directorate of BTRC; District Administration Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Taj Uddin and the raiding team of RAB-15 Hoaikyang Camp participated in it. At this time, raids were conducted in Kutupalong Bazar, Alam Market, Bakhtiar Market, Ukhia Bazar and Chowdhury Market in Courtbazar area of Ukhia police station.
In the operation, through mobile court, illegal and fake mobile handsets, walkie-talkies, illegal SIM sellers and illegal internet service providers were fined a total of taka 9 lakh and 136 fake mobile handsets, walkie-talkies, illegal SIMs and other fake and illegal telecommunication equipment were seized.
In addition, raids underwent at the offices of unlicensed Internet service providers in Chowdhury Market in Courtbazar area under Ukhia Thana. At this time, various telecommunications equipment for illegal internet connection were seized. Later, the inspection team of BTRC filed a case against Belal Hossain Sayedi, an unlicensed illegal internet service provider, under Section 35(2)/57(3) of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulation Act 2001 (Amended 2010) at Ukhia police station.
Such operations of BTRC will be conducted regularly against telecommunication service providers violating government laws and regulations.
