A customer has filed a case against Shamima Nasrin, former chairman of e-commerce platform Evaly, and her husband, CEO Mohammad Russel, for embezzling Tk 26.77 lakh. Jannatul Ferdous, a resident of Hemayetpur in Savar, filed the case in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Devdash Chandra Adhikari on Sunday.
According to the lawsuit, he was attracted to Evaly’s dazzling advertisement and ordered products worth Tk. 26,77,500. He also gave all the money to Evaly’s account. However, the company failed to deliver the product. The plaintiff then asked Evaly to return his money. Evaly later handed over 5 checks to the complainant. However, all checks bounced in September and November last year after being submitted to United Commercial Bank Limited (UCB) in Hemayetpur. He reported the matter to Evaly after the incident. But Evaly said they can’t afford to pay.
The court recorded the plaintiff’s statement in the light of the allegations. After the hearing of the case, the OC of Dhanmondi police station was directed to register it as a regular case.
RAB arrested Mohammad Russel, the former CEO of Evali, and his wife Shamima in a raid on his residence in Mohammadpur on September 18 last year in a case of embezzlement filed with Gulshan Police Station. Shamima was released on bail on April 6. However, Russel is still in prison.
