IBM is closing its business in Russia. After suspending operations in the country earlier this year, IBM chief executive Arvind Krishna told workers that the company was closing all its operations in Russia and had begun layoffs.
In a letter sent to workers, Krishna said the company has been monitoring the safety of workers and their families in war-torn areas for the past few months. The company suspended its operations in March but has so far paid its employees.
“We have decided to suspend our operations in Russia so that we can evaluate long-term options while continuing to pay and supply our workers in Russia,” the CEO wrote in his letter.
“As the aftermath of the war continues to grow and the long-term effects of this war increase uncertainty, we have now decided to close down IBM’s business in Russia,” he said.
He noted that the company considers the move to be appropriate and necessary, and that it is a normal step after the suspension of business.
“We acknowledge that this is very difficult news and I want to assure the staff that IBM will continue to stand by them and provide them with all possible support and take all reasonable steps to make their transfer as orderly as possible,” Krishna said.
