In addition to space tourism, Blue Origin has big plans. The spaceflight company owned by Jeff Bezos has announced the creation of a commercial space station called ‘Orbital Reef’. It will be built as a hub of industry and commerce. News Reuters.
According to Blue Origin, the space station will be launched in the second half of this decade.
The commercial space station will be built jointly with Sierra Space, a subsidiary of the Sierra Nevada Corporation. Both companies will own and operate jointly. It will be supported by Boeing, Redware Space, Genesis Engineering Solutions and Arizona State University.
Blue Origin will create ‘The Orbital Reef’ as a ‘commercial park’, but it will remain in space. The company said in a statement that the initiative is to provide a complete and affordable service to research, industry, international and commercial customers, including space transportation and logistics services. If anyone wants to make their own address in space, that too will be possible.
The Orbital Reef will be able to accommodate 10 people, which will be about the same capacity as the International Space Station (ISS). Any customer or nation can avail its services.
