Protests continue in Cuba over the failure of the coronavirus to play a proper role in preventing the epidemic and the collapse of the country’s overall economy. Social media, including Facebook, has been playing an important role in the anti-government protests. And these media have been shut down to prevent this protest. News Engadget.
Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Telegram have been at least partially shut down in the Caribbean island since Monday, according to Internet access tracking firm Netblocks.
This block is still in effect. Even in Havana, mobile data connections are being cut off by local residents. Mobile internet access is quite new in Cuba. The country’s socialist government started the service at the end of 2016.
Protesters are demanding the resignation of current President Miguel Diaz-Canal. Media experts say the Cuban government is trying to impose a digital blackout that shuts down protesters’ communication channels.
WhatsApp and Telegram have not yet commented on the shutdown.
