The Gulshan Society is actively working to tackle the traffic congestion in the Gulshan area. A significant cause of this issue is that many drivers lack proper knowledge of traffic laws. Additionally, unnecessary honking contributes to noise pollution, which harms both the environment and public health. In collaboration with the Department of Environment and BRAC, the Gulshan Society has initiated a project to retrain drivers and raise awareness on traffic regulations and the detrimental effects of noise pollution.
The first phase of this initiative took place on Friday, October 18, at 9 AM at Gulshan Lake Park, where 104 drivers were trained on traffic rules and the importance of reducing noise pollution. The event commenced with welcome speeches from Gulshan Society President Barrister Omar Sadat and Vice President Syed Almas Kabir. Assistant Commissioner (Traffic) Sayem from Dhaka Metropolitan Police offered advice to drivers on how to avoid contributing to traffic congestion. Fazle Elahi, Project Director from the Department of Environment, highlighted the crucial role drivers play in reducing noise pollution.
Trainer Gazi Mohibur Rahman explained the nature of sound and how excessive honking can be hazardous to human health. He also discussed ways to minimize unnecessary horn use. Rahman warned that the government is planning to take strict action soon to enforce laws related to noise pollution.
Matiur Rahman from BRAC’s Road Safety Program and James Joab Soren, a BRAC Driving School trainer, provided detailed instruction on traffic laws, road markings, right of way, traffic control devices, driver behavior and etiquette, AI-based traffic cameras, and safe driving practices.
Drivers who attended the session expressed their gratitude for the initiative, noting that it not only increased their awareness but also requested that such training be organized regularly for all drivers in the area. In addition to lunch, each participant was given an allowance of BDT 300 and a certificate of completion.
