Syed Almas Kabir, the former president of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), was detained by the Detective Branch (DB) of police on Monday night, October 14, in connection with a student murder case during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
According to reports, a case was filed at Mohammadpur Police Station by an individual named Obaidul Haque. Along with Syed Almas Kabir, the case names former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and 82 others. Additionally, 100-150 unidentified members of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations were listed as accused.
The case, filed on September 27 at Mohammadpur Police Station, lists Syed Almas Kabir as the eighth accused. The case alleges that Kabir was an associate and financier of former State Minister for ICT, Zunaid Ahmed Palak.
The charges, filed under sections 302/109/114/34 of the Penal Code, claim that the accused, directly or indirectly, conspired and committed murder by firing guns. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station, Ali Iftekhar Hasan, accepted the case.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), Syed Almas Kabir is accused of instructing the attack on students during the movement. The incident occurred near the Beribandh intersection under the jurisdiction of the Mohammadpur Police Station and the Rayer Bazaar police outpost.
