Police have arrested five students for beating up a young man named Tofazzal Hossain at Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall of Dhaka University (DU) on suspicion of being a thief.
They are Jalal Miah of the 2018-19 academic year of the Department of Physics and the former Deputy Science and Technology Secretary of the Chhatra League, Mohammad Sumon of the 2020-21 academic year of the Soil Water and Environment Department, Muttakin Sakin of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science of the same academic year, Al Hossain Sajjad of the Department of Geography and Environment, and Ahsan Ullah, Deputy Secretary of Mass Communication and Development of Hall Branch Chhatra League for the 2018-19 academic year of Mathematics Department.
University proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said that 4 of them have been identified by watching the video footage. He said, “We have video footage of those who have been handed over to the police station. When they came to the hall Provost’s room to give their statements, they themselves confirmed that the footage was theirs. They were directly involved in the incident – we have such footage too.”
Proctor also said, “This incident is very unexpected. We cannot mold them like children when they come to university and their grooming is a continuous process. They come readily groomed”.
“Among those who have been arrested is a former leader of the Chhatra League. They have a long practice of 15 years. There is a frenzy between them. Some of the deviance among the students has also been revealed through this unexpected incident.”
Saifuddin Ahmed said, “Our message against the perpetrators is very clear. I don’t think there was a precedent in Dhaka University that a case was filed so quickly in such an incident. With the unprecedented cooperation of our students and the police administration, we were able to identify the four. No evildoer shall be spared.”
Earlier, the seven-member inquiry committee formed on Thursday afternoon was directed to submit its report by evening. In the interest of fair investigation, the decision to extend the time was taken in view of the committee’s application. The report was rescheduled to be submitted on Friday morning.
